COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of seven persons killed on South Carolina roadways from Friday, May 20, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, May 22, at midnight. 

As of May 22, 2016, 339 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 366 highway deaths during the same time period in 2015.

Of the 229 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2016, 107 were not wearing safety belts. 

Through midnight May 22, 43 pedestrians died compared to 43 in 2015; 43 motorcyclists died compared to 48 in 2015; and ten bicyclists died compared to nine in 2015 on state roads and highways.
