Families of Highway Fatalities

In-Memory-Of-Header

Have you lost a loved one on South Carolina roadways?

You are not alone...

Every year in our nation more than 30,000 people are tragically killed on our highways – sadly, we lose approximately 1,000 lives on South Carolina roads each year. For each life lost, there is a family left behind to grieve. Family members are encouraged to post an online memorial to their loved one on our In Memory Of web page.

We hope you will visit our site and learn more about how we, and our partners, may be able to help you and your family through this difficult time.

Families of Highway Fatalities (FHF) Mission Statement

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety is dedicated to providing resources for families who have lost loved ones in traffic collisions through the Families of Highway Fatalities (FHF) program. Our goal is to provide support for grieving families; to facilitate opportunities for grieving families to interact; and to prevent further highway fatalities through public education and information.

About FHF

The Families of Highway Fatalities’ group provides bereavement resources and an avenue for families to share their stories as a safety message to others. FHF is comprised of family members who have suffered a motor vehicle fatality and friends of fatality victims. Members benefit from opportunities to talk with each other about their losses and referrals to counseling and support workshops. FHF seeks to address the unique situations brought on by sudden and traumatic losses related specifically to death on the highways. Our members help guide the programs we offer based on their evolving needs.

FHF was created in 2003 and formally named in 2005. The South Carolina Highway Patrol, a division of the SC Department of Public Safety, received federal grant funding in 2007 for its Families of Highway Fatalities’ program. SCHP’s Victim Services Unit oversees the FHF program.
