SCDPS Reports Eight Killed on South Carolina Roadways During the Memorial Day Travel Period - May 24, 2019 to May 27, 2019

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of eight persons killed on South Carolina roadways during the Memorial Day travel period, which started Friday, May 24, at 6 p.m. and concluded Monday, May 27, at 11:59 p.m.

There were eight fatalities during the 2018 Memorial Day travel period.

As of May 27, 369 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 405 highway deaths during the same time period in 2018.

Of the 369 people who have died in 2019, 253 had access to seatbelts, and 122 were not wearing seat belts. 

Through May 27, 67 pedestrians have died compared to 61 in 2018; 27 motorcyclists have died compared to 45 in 2018; and 11 bicyclists have died compared to 6 in 2018 on state roads and highways.
