SCDPS REPORTS 13 KILLED ON SOUTH CAROLINA ROADWAYS DURING THE LABOR DAY TRAVEL PERIOD (AUGUST 30 To SEPTEMBER 2, 2019)

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of 13 persons killed on South Carolina roadways during the 78-hour Labor Day travel period, which started on Friday August 30, at 6 p.m. and concluded on Monday, September 2, at 11:59 p.m. Eleven of these deaths occurred during the weekend period from Friday, August 30, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, September 1, at 11:59 p.m.  In 2018, there were 12 deaths during the 78-hour Labor Day travel period, which occurred from August 31 at 6 p.m. through  September 3 at 11:59 p.m.

As of September 2, 2019 638  people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 693 highway deaths during the same time period in 2018.

Of the 638 people who have died in 2019, 414 had access to seatbelts, and 204 were not wearing seat belts. 

Through September 2, 103 pedestrians have died compared to 106 in 2018; 78 motorcyclists have died compared to 77 in 2018; and 21 bicyclists have died compared to 14 in 2018 on state roads and highways.
