SCDPS to Honor Victims of Traffic Fatalities in Annual Memorial Service

Fri, 04/25/2025

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety will hold a virtual memorial service on Saturday, April 26 at 10 a.m. to remember the more than 1,000 lives lost on South Carolina roadways in 2024.

Since 1988, the annual service has served to commemorate the people who lost their lives on South Carolina’s roadways; to bring together their friends and families; and to educate the public in an effort to prevent future loss of life on the state’s roads.

“We hold this solemn event to remember and mourn the lives lost as a result of a traffic collision in South Carolina,” said SCDPS Director Robert G. Woods IV. “Each name represents the life of a person who was a son, a daughter, a father, a mother, a husband, a wife, a family member, or a friend. And although words can never fully mend the pain of that loss, we hope this memorial stands as a reminder that your loved ones are not forgotten.”

The virtual service will be streamed on the SCDPS Facebook page and shared in a special Facebook event that is open to the public. The Facebook event space serves as a forum where families and friends are encouraged to connect with one another and share tributes, photos, and stories of their loved ones who were killed in a traffic collision in 2024.

Saturday’s service will include a video tribute and several messages of comfort from highway safety professionals at the Department of Public Safety. During the tribute, the names of those who have passed on will be presented and honored. Information about services and resources for families of the victims will be available during the service.
