COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of two persons killed on South Carolina roadways from Friday, January 29, at 6:00 p.m. until Sunday, January 31, at midnight.

As of January 31, 2016, 54 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 71 highway deaths during the same time period in 2015.

Of the 36 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2016, 22 were not wearing seat belts. 

Through midnight January 31, eight pedestrians died compared to 14 in 2015; five motorcyclists died compared to four in 2015; and three bicyclists died compared to one in 2015 on state roads and highways.
