Lance Corporal J. D. “Rock” Haynes died in the line of duty February 1, 2008. Trooper Haynes was responding to a motor vehicle accident involving multiple tractor trailers on Interstate 26. While traveling on SC Highway 33 his vehicle left the rain soaked roadway and struck a utility pole.

Trooper Haynes had joined the Highway Patrol in 1997 and had been assigned to Troop Seven Post B Orangeburg/Calhoun Counties. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic news we received this morning of Trooper Haynes’ death,” ... “Even though we all know that the job of a law enforcement officer is dangerous, we are never prepared for such a loss.”
