Lance Corporal Hewitt was on duty in Florence County investigating a motor vehicle collision when a pickup struck his patrol car from behind. Lance Corporal Hewitt died from his injuries as well as the driver of the pickup and a pedestrian standing nearby. Lance Corporal Hewitt was a nine year veteran of the Patrol and a native of Horry County.
