Patrolman McCracken was on duty when he was involved in a collision with a mail carrier while on his motorcycle in Fairfield County on October 12, 1931. Patrolman McCracken was on his way from Chester to join a squad of 12 patrolmen for duty out of state. Virginia’s Governor had requested the patrolman attend the sesquicentennial celebration held in Yorktown, Virginia. Patrolman McCracken was the first patrolman to die in the line of duty in the newly formed South Carolina Highway Patrol.
