Patrolman Ray was on duty in Orangeburg County when he stopped a vehicle for speeding. Patrolman Ray did not know that the three assailants in the vehicle had just committed an armed robbery at a nearby motel. Patrolman Ray was shot several times and killed instantly. Two of the assailants were sentenced to death and the other served a 10-year sentence. Patrolman Ray was a native of Spartanburg County and an 11-year veteran of the Patrol. Patrolman Ray had two brothers. One was a Highway Patrolman and the other a police officer as well.
